Held on Monday, June 7, 2010, the scheduled event entitled: “KOSYNTHOS – Part of our life” in the framework of the celebration of the World Day for the Environment.
The aim of the event was to sensitize the local community and especially the future generation about the existing problem of the river Kosynthos.
This activity was organized by the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, the Regional Education of the Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, the Directories of Primary Education of Prefectures of Rhodope and Xanthi, the Europe Direct Information Centre of Komotini and the Centre for the Environmental Education of Vistonida.
The meeting point was the Scout Center for Environmental Education “Gerakas”, which is located at the 8th km Xanthi-Stavroupolis, where the welcome of the pupils-participants took place, as well as an extensive audio-visual presentation about the seriousness of the contamination of the river Kosynthos.
After this session, the pupils had the opportunity to take part in a symbolic cleansing of accessible points of the bed of the river. The teachers and the animators who accompanied the pupils provide in the meanwhile useful information and tips for a rubbish-free environment.
When the pupils completed this stage, they returned to the initial meeting point and took part in four different workshops. These workshops were especially designed for raising the environmental awareness of the pupils concerning the recycle, the new sources of energy and the protection of the biodiversity.
At the end, each pupil took a certificate of participation and several publications for the environment by the Publications Office of the European Union. It is worth noting the significant presence during the event of volunteer rescuers of the Red Cross – Samarites of Xanthi.
